James Robbins
James mixes and matches a variety of clinical strategies, customizing his approach to the unique personality, life background and treatment goals of each client. Three of his primary treatment approaches are Mindfulness, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy.
Mindfulness is about increased awareness of self, others and environment. Various practices, including meditation, teach the client to carefully observe his or her thoughts, feelings and actions without judging or impulsively reacting. Mindfulness cultivates a calm “center” from which to enjoy the often unpredictable ups and downs of day-to-day life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy encourages clients to set clear and realistic goals across all areas of life. Clients discover how certain long-held assumptions and core beliefs profoundly shape their perception of life events and situations. A structured, logical approach, CBT asks individuals to re-evaluate old patterns of thinking, feeling and doing, letting go those which no longer serve them.
Psychodynamic Therapy approach helps clients understand their current struggles within the larger context of their entire lives. It emphasizes the ways in which early experiences with parents and siblings shape our adult lives. It teaches boundary setting and self-sufficiency, while deepening personal relationships and clarifying career issues.
Education & Professional Background
James has earned a Master’s degree in professional counseling from Amberton University, as well as a Master’s degree in writing from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to becoming a licensed therapist, James was a professional musician and music teacher. In 2003, James published his first non-fiction book Build a Better Buddha. James has lectured and offered workshops throughout Texas and along the West Coast, exploring various topics related to psychology and spirituality. James has been a featured expert in a variety of print, radio and television media.
